Design System

A design system combines rules, design tokens, components, and documentation for consistent digital products.

A design system combines rules, design tokens, components, and documentation for consistent digital products. Value comes from governed tokens, accessible components, clear documentation, and consistent maintenance. The concept is closely related to Design Token and Component Library.

FAQ

Design System

How can the value of a design system be measured?
The value shows up qualitatively: how often components are reused, how quickly a new page comes together, how many deviations appear in reviews, and how many questions pass between design and engineering. Concrete numbers depend on the starting point. A comparison before and after adoption is the useful approach.
How do Figma and code work together in a design system?
Figma holds the component and variable library, while the code holds the implemented library. Tokens act as a shared source so both sides use the same values. Alignment remains an ongoing task: if only one side changes, drift appears and design and product move apart.
Who is responsible for a design system within an organization?
Ownership works as a dedicated core team or as a federated model in which design and engineering share it. Named roles, a contribution process for new components, and versioning matter. Without clear responsibility, each project team ends up deciding on its own, and consistency is lost.
Why do design systems typically fail?
Common causes are missing owners, a build as a one-off project, and too much scope too early. Thin documentation and unchecked deviations in the products add to this. Then nobody uses the building blocks, and the system goes stale. A small core with a clear maintenance process holds up better than a large library without an owner.
How does a design system differ from a style guide and a component library?
Documenting design rules is the job of a style guide, while a component library supplies the finished building blocks. The design system covers both and adds tokens, principles, usage rules, and a maintenance process. Without governance it remains a collection. Only binding adoption turns individual parts into a system.
When is a design system worth building?
A design system pays off with several products, websites, or teams using the same building blocks. Then reuse saves more time than setup and maintenance cost. For a single small website the effort is often too high, and a lean style guide with tokens usually suffices. The yardstick is the amount of repetition.
