FAQ

Client-First

Does Client-First replace a design system in Webflow?
No, the two solve different problems. A design system defines colors, typography, spacing, and components, while Client-First governs how classes are named and structured. Together they produce consistency in both design and code. Without a design system, Client-First remains an organizing principle with no binding visual rules behind it.
What typical mistakes occur when working with Client-First?
Mixed patterns are the most common problem: custom class names next to the system, styles attached to combo classes instead of utilities, and unclear ownership of changes. The result is a class inventory that neither the convention nor the team can explain. A short style guide and regular cleanup keep the system from becoming a facade.
How does Client-First differ from BEM?
BEM names classes by block, element, and modifier and comes from classic front-end development. Client-First is tailored to how people work in Webflow and prescribes fixed conventions for sections, containers, and utility classes. Both approaches protect readability. What matters is that a team applies a single convention consistently instead of mixing them.
When does Client-First pay off in a Webflow project?
Client-First pays off once several people work on a project or a site is maintained for years. Consistent class names make the structure readable for new team members. For a single landing page without follow-up maintenance, the learning effort outweighs the benefit, because the system demands discipline for every class and element.
