Vendor Lock-in
Vendor lock-in occurs when proprietary technology, data formats, or processes make changing providers unusually difficult.
Vendor lock-in can make future changes more complex and expensive by tying systems closely to proprietary technologies, formats, or provider-specific processes. The risk can be reduced through open standards, portable data, clear documentation, and an exit strategy that considers how services and content could be migrated later. The concept is closely related to Total Cost of Ownership and Website Migration.
