How do serverless functions affect cost and operations?
Billing is usually based on usage rather than provisioned capacity, which can be cheap under fluctuating load. Under constantly high load, an always-on server can be more economical. Monitoring, logging, and debugging add effort because executions are distributed and short-lived.
What is a cold start in a serverless function?
A cold start is the delay on the first invocation, when the environment still has to be provisioned. It occurs more often with infrequent calls and can noticeably raise response times. How much depends on runtime, package size, and provider. Critical paths should be tested for it.
When is a serverless function suitable, and when is it not?
Short, stateless tasks with fluctuating load suit it well, such as form processing, webhooks, or small API endpoints. Long-running processes, persistent connections, or highly latency-critical flows do not. Providers also limit runtime and memory, which should be checked before planning.
Does a serverless function mean no server exists?
No. Servers still run; only their operation sits with the provider. Provisioning, scaling, and maintenance drop away for the team, while the code and its security remain its responsibility. Serverless describes an operating model, not the absence of infrastructure. Questions about data protection and vendor lock-in remain.
