When does a website not need hreflang?
For sites with a single language and one target market, hreflang is unnecessary. It also helps little when variants differ in content, such as different offers rather than translations. It becomes useful once identical or very similar content exists for several languages or regions. The effort pays off where mix-ups genuinely confuse visitors.
How do hreflang and canonical URLs work together?
The two declarations must complement each other. Each language variant should canonicalize to itself and point to its counterparts via hreflang. If a variant's canonical points to another language, it contradicts the hreflang cluster, and search engines may ignore the variant. Canonicals resolve duplicates; hreflang connects translations.
Is hreflang a ranking factor for Google?
No. hreflang does not affect how well a page ranks, but which language version is shown to an audience in the results. It helps avoid confusion between similar pages. Google treats the annotations as a hint, not a directive. Content that is very similar should still be clearly distinguishable.

Return links are often missing: if page A points to B, B must also point to A. How is hreflang implemented technically?

Maintaining one method consistently is easier than mixing several.
