CMS Migration

A CMS migration moves content, data models, media, and editorial processes from one content system to another.

A CMS migration moves content, data models, media, and editorial processes from one content system to another. A complete inventory, clear mappings, testing, and post-launch monitoring reduce content, SEO, and operational risk. The concept is closely related to Website Migration and Content Migration.

FAQ

CMS Migration

When is switching content management systems worthwhile?
A switch pays off when the existing system persistently fails to meet requirements: limited flexibility, high maintenance effort, security risks, or limits in performance and multichannel delivery. Switching out of mere dissatisfaction often just relocates problems. Goals, costs, and migration effort should be weighed against the expected improvement beforehand.
Which content should not be carried over in a CMS migration?
Outdated, duplicate, and low-performing content with no strategic value should stay behind. A migration is a chance to clean up the inventory instead of transferring legacy clutter. A content audit that evaluates quality and usage provides the basis. For pages with backlinks, redirects or replacement pages need to be settled before deletion.
What determines how long a CMS migration takes?
Duration depends mainly on content volume, data quality, and the complexity of the data model, less on the target system. A small amount of cleanly structured content transfers quickly. Large legacy archives with inconsistent fields need cleanup and manual rework. A reliable estimate requires a completed inventory.
What SEO risks does a CMS migration carry?
The main risks are removed or changed URLs without redirects, lost metadata and canonical tags, and altered internal linking. Such errors can reduce visibility. Redirect mapping, before-and-after comparisons, and monitoring of indexing and crawl errors limit the risk, but they cannot guarantee that rankings are preserved.
How does a CMS migration differ from a relaunch?
A relaunch changes design, structure, or content, while a CMS migration swaps the underlying system. The two can happen separately or together. Separate steps make sources of error easier to trace, and a combined project saves coordination. The right approach depends on how much structure and URLs will change.
What does a CMS migration typically look like?
The process runs in phases: inventory, target model, field mapping, transfer, testing, and go-live with monitoring afterward. Sequence matters, because mapping and testing are costly to correct later. Redirects and content review belong in the plan from the start rather than being added at the end.
