FAQ

ccTLD

How does a ccTLD differ from a generic domain such as .com?
Tied to a country, a ccTLD signals the market to search engines and users, while a generic domain such as .com carries no country signal. With .com, subdirectories and hreflang steer the targeting. Some endings such as .io or .tv are ccTLDs but are treated by search engines like generic domains.
What are the drawbacks of a ccTLD for international SEO?
Each ccTLD has to build visibility on its own, and link building and operations multiply with the number of countries. Certificates, analytics, and governance become more complex. A ccTLD also cannot sensibly serve several countries that share a language. The extra work pays off only with real market potential.
When does a ccTLD make sense compared with a subdirectory?
A ccTLD makes sense when a market is run independently, with a local team, its own brand, and its own content. It sends the strongest country signal but requires domain costs, visibility building, and upkeep per country. For a few markets under a shared brand, a subdirectory is usually leaner.
