Mobile First

Mobile first starts design and implementation with small screens, then progressively enhances the experience for larger devices.

Mobile first starts design and implementation with small screens, then progressively enhances the experience for larger devices. Good implementations remain semantic, maintainable, and fast across devices and input methods. The concept is closely related to Responsive Design and Website Performance.

FAQ

Mobile First

How does mobile first affect Core Web Vitals?
Mobile first can improve Core Web Vitals, because narrow viewports push toward fewer and lighter resources, simpler layouts, and less layout shift. It is no guarantee: LCP, CLS, and INP are measured in the field and depend on images, scripts, and fonts. Measured values show whether the approach actually works.
What are typical mistakes in mobile-first projects?
Often only the layout is shrunk while load time and usability stay untouched: oversized images, tiny tap targets, hover interactions without an alternative. The desktop version suffers too when it is merely a stretched mobile view. Testing on real devices with touch input exposes these problems sooner than browser emulation alone.
When does mobile first pay off if most usage is on desktop?
It still pays off, because it forces prioritization: content is ranked, navigation is simplified, and ballast is dropped. For pure B2B applications with negligible mobile use, a desktop-first design can be defensible. Actual usage data should drive that decision rather than assumptions.
Why is mobile first not the same as responsive design?
Responsive design means a layout adapts to the screen width. Mobile first adds a sequence: design and code start at the smallest viewport and are extended for larger ones. A page can be responsive without having been built mobile first, usually with more overriding code as a result.
