Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the beta version of Amazon Honeycode. For over 14 years, AWS has been the world's largest and most widely used cloud platform. AWS offers over 175 fully functional services for computing, storage, databases, networking, analytics, robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), mobile communications, security, hybrid, virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), media, and application development, deployment, and management. We'll give you a brief introduction to Amazon Honeycode.

What is Amazon Honeycode?

In recent years, the low-code and no-code industries have experienced tremendous growth. Companies are looking for alternative ways to redesign their websites and web apps and make changes and updates themselves. Low-code tools enable more people in your company to develop independent applications without code.

Amazon Honeycode and other low-code development platforms allow anyone in an organization to build web or mobile applications without programming knowledge. Sounds amazing, doesn't it? With low-code, it's possible! Low-Code includes templates for many common applications that you and other members of your team can use right away. Amazon Honeycode features include:

In this video, Amazon demonstrates how your customers use Honeycode to automate the management of field workers, complete order approvals, schedule weekly events, report on employee or team activities, track task progress, track customer activity, survey end users, manage content, inventory resources, and many more of these activities.

Using Amazon Honeycode

To build apps for your team, you must first set up the data that you want your app to use in a honeycode table. Import data from CSV files or use a template to get ahead even faster.

Once you've set up your data, you can now use App Builder to design your app's interface and add features (such as forms and navigation). Each time you link the data, you can regenerate the app.

And Amazon Honeycode also thinks of other team members. With Amazon Honeycode, you can select data that anyone can see and protect private data.

To automate your own work, you can select conditions and set when they are triggered. Amazon Honeycode is designed to help you create forms, create approval processes, process data calculations, and customize workflows. Amazon Honeycode notifies your team member of any changes, and emails or mobile notifications can be sent automatically.

Once you've successfully built your app, you can now invite anyone to try out your app. You and your team will automatically receive an invitation to your new application.

Benefits & costs of Amazon Honeycode

Honeycode can be used via a browser or the Honeycode Android and iOS apps. Changes and updates can be adjusted immediately. The applications that are created with Honeycode also work in the browser and as a mobile app.

You can create apps for up to 20 users, 2,500 rows per workbook, and unlimited workbooks for free. If that's not enough for you, you can upgrade to get additional capacity. The “Plus” plan includes 20 members for $19 per month, 10,000 lines per workbook, unlimited workbooks, and an additional employee can be added for $9.99. For even higher data capacity, the $29.99 per month “Pro” plan includes 20 members, 100,000 rows per workbook, unlimited workbooks, and $19.99/month for each additional member.

Honeycode provides users with a range of templates for common use cases such as to-do list applications, customer trackers, surveys, schedules, budget approval, event and inventory management. It is powered by a database on AWS and a web-based, drag-and-drop interface builder.

What companies are saying about Amazon Honeycode

Larry Augustin, vice president of Amazon Web Services, Inc., says that:

Customers have told us that the need for custom applications far outstrips the capacity of developers to create them, now with Amazon Honeycode, almost anyone can create powerful custom mobile and web applications without the need to write code.

Many companies today rely on shared spreadsheets to get these things done. Brad Armstrong, Vice President of Business and Corporate Development at Slack, expressed his thoughts about Amazon Honeycode:

We see Amazon Honeycode as a great complement and extension to Slack and are excited about the opportunity to work together to create ways for our joint customers to work more efficiently and to do more with their data than ever before.

Don MacAskill, CEO and Chief Geek of SmugMug & Flickr, said:

We are excited to see the opportunity that Amazon Honeycode creates for our teams to build applications that help them respond to changing business conditions, based upon how easy it is to create new applications, it really should help our teams, and we can see it really taking off.

Both Slack, SmugMug, and More are planning to use Amazon Honeycode. That's great news for these companies, because with the Amazon Honeycode feature, it will ease the load and ensure that anyone can build an application themselves.
